WesterNet Ancillary Service: ListServer The WesterNet ListServer can be a productive adjunct to your communications needs. In brief, the ListServer offers an means for your members to communicate with everyone on your list by posting a single email to the ListServer. Your members can create an inbox with a filter pointing to it, so that all messages are collated automatically. There are few tools in today's world that can disseminate information so rapidly and efficiently. A ListServer can be Open or Closed. Open means that subscription is automatically OK'd upon application by email to the ListServer. This type of list is most suitable for marketing applications, where the success of the list depends on a growing membership and little or no management or editorial control is desired. It should be obvious that list growth (and therefore cost) is not controllable. Closed means that some control is exercised in ListServer membership. This is most commonly used for member feedback mechanisms. In order to receive the postings, the Owner must approve entry to the list. Usually, prospective members apply by email to the Owner, who then emails a batch of installs or deinstalls to the Administrator. Alternatively, the Owner may designate signup authority to the Administrator, who installs or deinstalls according to the Owner's preference (receipt, weekly, monthly). The Owner usually designates that only members may post. Alternatively, anyone who is in possession of the Listserver name may post. The latter may be subject to abuse. Additionally, in Closed membership, the right to place the posts may be limited to the Owner of the list. Members email the Owner, who then forwards messages of appropriate content to the ListServer for circulation. This is most appropriate for newsletters, where the members expect editorial control. There is no limit to the number of messages per month. Large attachments are not prohibited; however, your members will frown on excessive email size, especially if they have a normal connection. As with most of life, brevity is the soul of wit. If you would like a ListServer, please call or email us for more information.
