Configuring Windows 95/98 for dial-up Internet service ------------------------------------------------------ Things you need before you get started: Your Westernet.net username and password. The dialup phone number 375-1258. Windows 95/98 CD or Windows 95/98 Diskettes You will need to have your Windows 95/98 install diskettes 11-13 or Windows 95/98 CD-ROM ready. ----------------------------------------------------- Set up the Network and Check for Installed Components Open the Control Panel (from the Start button -> Settings -> Control Panel) Double click on the Network icon. You should now see a new window labeled Network and 3 tabs labeled Configuration, Identification, and Access Control. Just below that you should see a white window labeled The Following Network Components are Installed: and a list of components. The following Components must be listed before we can proceed: Client for Microsoft Networks Dial-Up Adapter TCP/IP (if you are on a LAN then this line should read Dial-Up Adapter -> TCP/IP) If you have all three, jump ahead to the next section. If you are missing any of the three above, then you need to install them. Single click the Add button, then Double click on Adapter. Select Microsoft from the list of manufacturers on the left, and Dial-Up Adapter from the list of Network Adapters on the right. Click on OK. Windows will be busy for 5-10 seconds; be patient. Single click on the Add button, then Double click on Protocol. Select Microsoft from the list of manufacturers on the left and TCP/IP from the list of network protocols on the right. Click on OK. Windows will be busy for 5-10 seconds. Configure The Network. You should now be back at the Network window. Double click on Dial-Up Adapter. Select Bindings from the pull tabs at the top of the window. Make sure that *ONLY* TCP/IP has a check mark beside it. If there are any other entries present, ensure they are unchecked. Click on OK at the bottom right corner of the screen. You should now be back at the Network window. Double click on TCP/IP or TCP/IP --> Dial up Adapter -- whichever one is listed. Windows 98 users will recieve a warning message - you can ignore this and proceed by clicking OK on the warning message dialogue box. You should see a new window labeled TCP/IP Properties with five or six tabs at the top of the screen. Click on the WINS Configuration tab. Ensure that Disable WINS Resolution is selected (the top choice). Single click on OK at the bottom of the screen. You should now be back at the Network window. Single click on OK once again, to close the Network Setup. Note: If you are asked to supply the compute a name and workgroup, just click on OK. Windows 95/98 will now prompt you for your install disks/CD-ROM. It will then copy some files from the install disks. You will then be prompted with a window that says that you must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect. Restart your computer by clicking on YES. ---------------------------------------------------------------- If you have all three components, you can set up Dial-Up-Networking. Check for and Install Dial Up Networking. Click on the Start button, then Programs, then Accessories (Win98 only: then Communications) and then select Dial-Up Networking. If you can't find it, then you will need to install it. If you have Dial-Up Networking, jump ahead to the next section. What follows are instructions on how to install it from the Windows 95/98 install disks/CD-ROM. You can skip this step if you already have Dial-Up Networking installed. Single click on the Start button, then Settings, then Control Panel. Double click on Add/Remove Programs. Select the Windows Setup top pull tab. Single click on Communications in the list of components. Single click on the Details button. Ensure that Dial-Up Networking is checked. Click OK, then OK once more. You will then be prompted for you your Windows 95/98 install disks or your Windows 95/98 CD-ROM. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Check Your Modem Installation Click on the Start button, then click on Programs, then Accessories (Win98 only: then Communications) and then select Dial-Up Networking. NOTE: If Windows 95/98 asks you to install a modem, follow the instructions on your screen to install your modem. Then skip to step number 3 "Configure Your Connection" below. If you have any troubles with this, please give us a call BEFORE continuing. Configure Your Connection This assumes that you already have a modem installed on your PC. Double click on Make New Connection. Enter westernet.net as the name of the computer you are dialing. Choose your modem from the Select a Modem list, and click on Next. In the phone number slot: enter the dialup phone number 385-1258. If you enabled your area code, then you must supply it. Click on Next, then Finish. You should now be back at the Dial-Up Networking window. Single click with your right mouse button on the westernet.net connection icon. Select Properties from the drop down menu. Click on Server Type. Make sure that the only settings that have check mark are "Enable Software Compression" and "TCP/IP". No other setting should have a check mark beside it. Versions of Dial-up Networking may vary slightly. Click on OK to save your changes and close this window. ----------------------------------------------------------------- You are now ready to try out your connection Double click on the westernet.net connection icon. You should see a window that says Connect To. In Username put your e-mail address - e.g. username@westernet.net. Then put your password into the Password field. For security reasons, you will not see your password appear as it is typed in. You can click on Save Password if you want to. Click on Connect. You should now hear your modem dial the phone. If you don't and you get an error, then reboot Windows 95/98. Then get back to this spot by clicking on Start, Programs, Accessories, (Win98 only: then Communications) then Dial-Up Networking. After your modem connects and suitable protocols are established, you will get a message confirming your connection. You are now "on the Internet." Welcome!
